RESILIENCY IN TEACHING
copyright HLS 2015
Head Teacher Leadership Services (HLS) offer high-quality support for the on-going development of governing bodies.
Based around our own current and ongoing experience of school governorship in three contrasting Local Authorities, HLS work closely with school governors to help develop a collective understanding of role, contribution to school life and how to offer effective challenge to the leadership of the school.
Accordingly, the development of an effective, strong governing body is an essential part of school leadership, and the impact of its role within leadership is a focus of any Ofsted review or inspection of a school or academy.
Governors have an additional vital role in their support for the life of the school. This is coupled with a legal obligation to ensure a particular well-being of the headteacher to maintain his or her professional resilience.
HLS training ensures these duties are clarified and good practice is shared.
What governors should do as their role in school is described within the current version of the DfE governors' handbook.
This states that every governor has the duties of :-
(a) Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction.
(b) Holding the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of staff; and
(c) Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.
Good governance does not just happen.
Being able to deal effectively with these three demanding areas of good governance has to be nurtured and developed over time.
Every School needs governors that are well informed of their role and duties, and have a clear understanding of the accountability that goes with their voluntary work in the school.. This need investment by the school in adequate training - and and in many cases time given to helping governors to work as a team with a shared ethos and working practice.
HLS also work with Chairs of Governors in supporting their particular vital contribution to the leadership of the school. We can assist Chairs to develop their personal understanding, flair and vision for their new role, and aid new Chairs as they take up their demanding position within the life of the school.
